Speeding tickets are a common occurrence among drivers, but they can also cause major trouble. In New York, each speeding ticket puts points on your driving record. If you rack up 11 points in an 18 month period, your license will be in danger of suspension for 31 days. Unfortunately, points can accumulate quickly for even the most conscientious drivers.
For example, here is a chart that outlines the points you incur for different speeding tickets:
1 – 10 MPH Over Limit
3 Points
11 – 20 MPH Over Limit
4 Points
21 – 30 MPH Over Limit
6 Points
31 – 40 MPH Over Limit
8 Points
41 + MPH Over Limit
11 Points
As you can see from the chart, a combination of even two tickets in a year and a half long period can incur enough points to suspend your license. Additionally, if you are charged with going 21+ MPH over the speed limit, in addition to a penalty of 6 points added to your license, you will be charged with DMV and Court fees.
Fortunately, you can dispute the tickets you receive in court. If you hire an an attorney, they can review the details of your case and often get it dismissed on a technicality, like a discrepancy in your ticket. Even if there are no mistakes on your ticket and it cannot be dismissed, attorneys can sometimes get a reduced penalty depending on the details of your case. Some people believe that hiring a lawyer is too costly, but attorneys will often work with their clients to be affordable and it will save you a countless amount of time, money and frustration to ensure your license isn't suspended over a few speeding tickets.
